Crow Eating

Outside my window
grows an aged grape holly
that Dr. Wilson let me dig.
It’s loaded with berries
that have long fed bluebirds,
mockingbirds, and robins.
One morning I saw a lone crow
inhaling its fruit and I wondered
where the others were.
If a lone crow finds a
new source of food
does it share or hoard?
I watched it gorge itself,
thought about crow nature
and wondered what I would do.
That afternoon the holly’s sharp
leafed limbs were bent by the weight
of crows.
Wonderful!
What would Lyle do?
He'd grab a handful of berries as he headed out to let the folks back home know there's grub to be had. He'd show up the next day with his tribe of misfits and do'gooders bringing reusable grocery bags from farmers markets and local co-ops and they would share the bounty with their families and friends. And pretty soon the berries would find their way into recipes and onto local menus and some wayward child would become his apprentice in picking, sorting and delivering delicious berries to shut-ins and old friends who would be reminded of long ago summers spent picking berries with their grandma.
And that is probably very close to what Lyle would…
